This policy applies to all clients who have undergone surgery and seek massage therapy services afterward.
Assessment Before Treatment:
Clients must have clearance from their surgeon, doctor, or healthcare provider before scheduling a massage.
All new clients or clients returning after surgery must complete a detailed health intake form, including information about their surgical history, current medications, and any ongoing treatments and/or update their current health history.
Rule of thumb: massage will be appropriate if they are cleared for normal activities.
Timing of Massage Therapy Post-Surgery:
Minor Surgeries (e.g., minor skin surgery, laparoscopic procedures): Massage may be considered safe 1-2 weeks post-surgery if cleared by the healthcare provider.
Moderate Surgeries (e.g., appendectomy, gallbladder removal): Massage may be appropriate 3-4 weeks post-surgery, subject to physician approval.
Major Surgeries (e.g., joint replacements, open-heart surgery): Massage therapy can be considered 4-6 weeks post-surgery, depending on individual recovery and clearance from the healthcare provider.
For older adults or those with complex health issues: The wait time may be longer, and extended evaluation by the healthcare provider is recommended.
Techniques and Areas of Focus:
Avoid areas directly affected by surgery, including incisions, swelling, or bruising until fully healed (typically by physician recommendation).
Will avoid deep pressure on legs for 6 weeks after Major Surgery as risk for Blood Clot is higher
Gradually introduce deeper work as the client heals and as advised by their healthcare provider.
It is the client ‘s responsibility to keep all open wound areas completely covered and protected for the entirety of the massage and those areas will be avoided during the massage.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage Specific:
When is it safe? Generally as soon as the client can comfortably lay on the massage table face-up it is safe to receive Lymphatic Drainage Massage. At least 3-4 days post surgery is the minimum required time before your first session, though this would require written clearance from the surgeon.
Your surgeon may recommend Lymphatic Drainage Massage 2-3 times/week for the first 4-6 weeks post-op and 1-2 times/week after during your recovery.
Please note that we do not perform any incisional drainage services; any drains, ports, or tubes must be removed, and the incisions must be closed and healed before your session.
No Brazilian Butt lift until they can lay on their backs.
