What To Expect For Your Therapeutic Massage Session
Many of our clients have asked about how to prepare for their massage, and what they are supposed to do during their session. The first steps to take while receiving your treatment are simply to focus on deep breathing and allow yourself to relax. We’ll break down some common questions and concerns below to set your mind at ease as you settle in for a blissful therapeutic massage.
Before Your Massage Begins
We recommend drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to reap the most benefit from the massage session. Massage therapy will increase your circulation, loosen muscles and connective tissue, and mobilize joints, and when you’re well hydrated these benefits are enhanced.
If it’s your first visit to our studio, please plan to arrive 10 minutes early to fill out a short intake form, which will ask about any old or new injuries, health history, and other physical pains and conditions that you have. The more information you provide, the better we can personalize your treatment. Everything that you share with us remains completely confidential.
Your therapist will then bring you to your treatment room and discuss any areas that you would like extra focus on, in addition to reviewing your intake form thoroughly. If you have any questions or concerns about your session, let your therapist know. Communication will help to make your session more relaxing and ensure that your therapeutic massage meets your needs.
Massage Table and Draping
During the massage, you’ll be lying on a comfortable yet supportive treatment table covered by sheets. There will be a sheet underneath you and a sheet with an extra blanket draped on top of you. All of our professional massage therapists will ensure that you are draped by a sheet at all times, and will only uncover the area of the body that is being worked on. Colorado law requires adequate draping to ensure the safety, comfort, and privacy of the client. If you feel uncomfortable with the draping at any time during your session, let your therapist know – we appreciate your feedback and our goal is to provide you with a safe and relaxing experience.
What To Wear During Your Session
It is common in most therapeutic massage and bodywork modalities for the client to be unclothed during treatment. This allows your therapist to access sore muscles more effectively while being able to smoothly transition from one area to the next (for example, from the neck to the arms) which can be more soothing for the client. It also allows for unrestricted mobility of joints while working to increase range of motion. During all treatments, you will remain conservatively draped by a sheet on top of you for comfort, regardless of what you choose to wear in session. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what you’re most comfortable with, and we are perfectly capable of providing therapeutic work for you whether your preference is to be completely unclothed, partially clothed, or remain fully clothed.
A Note About Body Concerns
Many a client have apologized for not shaving their legs, having limited flexibility, being a bit overweight, having dry feet, snoring, and many other conditions. As professionals in bodywork, we work with all body types and many different conditions, and are truly focused on relieving your pain and tension. It is important to emphasize that your natural state is just fine with us! However, we do ask that you shower prior to your session when possible for cleanliness and for more effective application of massage lotions and oils.
Communication During Your Massage
Some people like to sleep or zone out, while others enjoy conversation for some or all of their treatment time. We are happy to talk with you or to let you drift off. This is your time to relax and you are welcomed to feel at home and let us know if anything needs to change. That also goes for the temperature of the table (we have table warmers for your comfort), the pressure your therapist is using, the position of your face rest and bolsters, or if you need the therapist to adjust a technique they’re using. We encourage you to ask your therapist to adjust anything that’s making you uncomfortable. The more relaxed you are, the more you’ll get out of your session, and that is what we’re here for!
We use Pandora during sessions and normally play stations with soft music to help you drift into relaxation. However, if the music we have on isn’t to your liking, let us know. We can change the station to fit with your music preference.
